Story City's newest seafood company, Midland Co., has been awarded a statewide "small business of the month" award from America’s Small Business Development Center Iowa.

The business, which is located in Story City's old factory outlet mall and occupies 20,000 square feet, uses sustainable, environmentally friendly methods to raise shrimp in the Midwest.

Owner Jackson Kimle participated in ISU's Agricultural Entrepreneurship Initiative and ISU Startup Factory programs, according to the release. America's SBDC Iowa is a program between Iowa State University’s Ivy College of Business and the Office of Economic Development and Industry Relations.

"Jackson has been working with the SBDC center at Iowa State University since June of 2019 when they were interested in applying for funding from the Wellmark Community Venture Capital Fund," the release states. "They were successful in receiving funding from this program which was used to leverage private equity funding to build their demonstration farm in Story City."

Dave Biedenbach, regional director of America's SBDC Iowa at Iowa State University, said he was impressed with Kimle's work in developing the new business in Story City.

"Every time we connect he always has something to share about how they are pursuing and meeting key milestones," Biedenbach wrote in the release.

Kimle "was one of the first clients I connected with when I first came on as the director for the center in early 2019," Biedenbach wrote in the release.

"I attended several sessions of the Iowa State University Startup Factory cohort that Jackson was participating in and I was instantly impressed with his passion for creating a sustainable “tank-to-table” business model that provides fresh shrimp to consumers right here in the Midwest,"  he wrote.

The first harvest for the new company was set to take place in late fall or early winter, Kimle previously told the Tribune.

“We’re looking at a small first harvest,” Kimle said. “But eventually we’ll be building to 1,000 pounds a month. And we’ll be building out the facility so we’re producing about 80,000 pounds a year.”
