San Francisco's Iconic Boudin Bakery Opens Outdoor Park For A Crab-Centric Dining Experience - Forbes

If you’re familiar with San Francisco cuisine you know that its a city known for its fresh crab and sourdough bread! For those looking for an iconic dining experience, head to Boudin Bakery at Fisherman’s Wharf. While it is a touristy area of the city, one that’s often crowded with hoards of people from all over the world, that isn’t the case now due to the pandemic.

In response to the city-wide shut down, Boudin launched a new outdoor experience: Boudin Summer Grill & Crab Fest—a waterfront pop up and al fresco feast. Highlights include multiple stations of crab, wood-fired sourdough crust pizzas, barbecue, wine, beer, craft cocktails, and of course, the eatery’s legendary sourdough bread.

Guests can sit back in the sunshine under big red umbrellas at patio tables while they indulge on whole cracked crab, roasted crab with garlic sourdough breadcrumbs, crab salad sandwiches, crab cocktail and crab cakes.

And if you’re looking for other classic dishes, there’s also a menu of delicious pulled pork grilled salmon or chicken sandwiches; cheeseburgers straight from the grill on freshly baked sourdough buns; and pepperoni, margherita and veggie pizzas with a crunchy sourdough crust from a wood-fired oven.

At the helm of the outdoor operation is Executive Chef Misael Reyes who can be seen catering to guests, while ensuring the food is top notch, and safety protocol is followed.

We chatted with Boudin Bakery’s chairman, Dan Giraudo, on the crab fest, its legendary sourdough bread, and the overall dining experience. Here’s what he had to say.

How have you guys had to pivot since COVID and has it worked to your advantage given your iconic location?

The current environment has not allowed us to open Bistro Boudin, our full service restaurant and bar, so we pivoted and decided to turn part of our adjacent parking lot into an outdoor dining park and set up a BBQ grill and pizza oven where we are able to feature new items as well as popular items from the Bistro. We call it our “Summer Grill and Crab Fest.”

How much longer is Boudin’s Summer Grill & Crab Fest going on and will fresh crab and seafood still be available once it's over?

What types of seafood dishes can guests continue to look forward to?  We have every intention of keeping the park open well into 2021. We will continue to prominently feature Dungeness crab, offering our crab sandwiches, crab cakes, and Dungeness cracked crabs served different ways.

You have a fine dining restaurant in addition to the bakery and cafe, are the menus both done by the same chef? What is the inspiration for the menu and cuisine at Boudin?

Executive Chef Misael Reyes created the menu for our Summer Grill and Crab Fest as well as Bistro Boudin. Our menu at our Boudin SF locations is a collaboration by many people over the years meant to create unique menu offerings featuring our Sourdough bread. We still have some of the same classic items my Grandfather put on our first menu 40 years ago such as our Turkey and Havarti Sandwich and our Italian Classic.

Boudin is known for its legendary sourdough bread—how have you continued to incorporate that in your new dining al fresco experience?

Our Executive Chef Misel Reyes along with our Master Baker Fernando Padilla have created Sourdough Pizzas with a unique sourdough crust. Since we started this at our Summer Grill and Crab Fest, we have rolled out the same sourdough crust pizzas to all of our locations.

What can guests look forward to when taking a seat at the new outdoor space?

Great food, great people, and great sourdough bread.
