Ecuadorian farm-gate shrimp prices continue to rise, increasing by between $0.10/kg and $0.30/kg across all sizes in week 51, according to the data available on Undercurrent News' prices portal.

As of week 51 (Dec. 14-20), average farmgate prices for head-on, shell-on (HOSO) Ecuadorian shrimp were $4.60/kg for 20/30 count shrimp; $3.70/kg for 30/40; $3.40/kg for 40/50; $3.10/kg for 50/60; $2.80/kg for 60/70; $2.50/kg for 70/80; and $2.30/kg for both 80/100 and 100/120 count shrimp.

An increase that started last week has been well accepted within the sector even though it is "atypical" considering the time of year, as Ecuadorian shrimp is not much of a Christmas product, producers said.

"Due to the pandemic, we [producers] have realized we need to take advantage of every little positive thing that happens to us," a small shrimp producer commenting on a farmer's Facebook forum said about this issue last week.

However, he was not optimistic about the outlook, stating there is "not a single reason" for prices to rise too much.

Ecuador isn't the only country where shrimp raw material prices are rising.

Even though the latest data available for HOSO raw material vannamei shrimp from China comes up to week 49, Vietnamese prices trend closer to China's Guangdong hub, as the chart below shows.

Even though Chinese raw material is still by far the world's most expensive shrimp, Vietnamese 50-count shrimp prices rose to VND 144,000 per kilogram, the equivalent of $6.23/kg and only $0.50 cheaper than 60-count shrimp from China on week 49 when converted to dollars.

Prices for 50-count shrimp from Andhra Pradesh, India, continued well above same-size shrimp from Indonesia at $5.15/kg in week 50. However, the fell to an equivalent of $5.03/kg in week 51, while week 51 prices for Indonesian 50-count shrimp are not available yet.

In Thailand, where production is expected to be around 240,000 metric tons in 2021, the latest prices available for 60-count shrimp from Thailand show prices very close to Indonesian 50-count shrimp at $4.86/kg in week 48.

Ecuadorian farmed shrimp continues to be the world's cheapest. The country's companies have suffered in 2020 with demand dropping in its main market, China, due to the coronavirus pandemic.
