PORT LAVACA, TEXAS — Three Calhoun Sand Crab athletes signed to various schools to further their athletic and academic aspirations Tuesday morning at the Calhoun high school gym. Senior Chase Chapa signed to Midland University located in Nebraska to continue his career as a power lifter. Chapa went undefeated in the past two years at the 123 weight class and was a state champion. Chapa also set two state records, 500 lbs on dead lift and a state total of 1,200 lbs . He said he hopes to make a positive impact on the team as a freshman and better himself as a lifter and a student.
“Well this truly means a lot. Midland University is known and has a reputation for power lifting so for the school to offer me something, it means the world to me,” says Chapa.
Senior Alanyna Searcy will also be attending Midland University in the fall for power lifting, too. Searcy set the state record for squat with 540 lbs and would have beaten that weight if it was not for a technicality that prevented her from obtaining 560 lbs. Searcy would win the state meet and have receive awards for outstanding squat in both regional and state meets. She says this year was tough because her family was not able to be at the events due to COVID-19.
“Its both exciting and terrifying all at the same time for me. Being 15 hours away from home, its definitely going to be hard on my family and myself since i won’t be able to be with them, but it is a really proud moment for our family,” says Searcy.
Senior Joshua Huang is signing to Texas Lutheran University to play tennis. Huang has a 8-2 record in singles as the number one spot during the 2020 season. He qualified for areas in the number one spot in singles and doubles. Huang finished district runner-up in mixed doubles and qualified for regionals. Huang says he feels like a burden has been lifted now that he officially signed to TLU to play.
“I am excited most about meeting new people getting the college experience and of course playing tennis with my teammates and having fun in general,” says Huang.
The families of the athletes brought medals and pictures showing off their child’s accomplishments, while students gathered in the gym to show support for their fellow classmates. There were also cupcakes and other treats there for everyone to enjoy.
