FORT MYERS, Fla.– A Fort Myers Beach stone crabber is searching for what she calls a “crab trap bandit” after 10 of her traps were taken out of the water overnight earlier this week.
Melody is stone crab trapper with Maritime Charter South, a company that also hosts dolphin excursion.
She said when the boat crew went to check their traps this week, many of them were missing.
“They found 10 missing traps in the traps they had set out,” Melody said.
“This steals food from our family and friends.”
With each trap costing anywhere from $200-$300, they’re out over a thousand dollars, which does not include the crabs potentially inside those traps.
“Several hundred dollars worth of crabs were absolutely stolen from those traps, along with the riggings.”
She isn’t the only stone crabber who has been victimized by this real life pirate.
“There’s other charter Captains out here that trap just for their own, not commercially, and they’re getting their traps stolen as well,” said Melody.
Melody said she’s reaching out to nearby businesses on the beach who may have cameras that caught the thief salty handed.
Maritime Charter’s Captain is offering a reward for anyone with information that could help solve this crime.
