For the second year in a row, the Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival in Fernandina Beach has been called off due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a letter posted on the festival’s website, organizers say based on the current status of the coronavirus and vaccines, they voted to cancel the event. It had been scheduled to take place April 29th through May 2nd.
Board chairman Harry Harrison spoke with our partner Action News Jax, saying it was a tough decision, but the right one.
“We’re not going to be the ones to make someone sick; take a chance of somebody passing away, some family member or, you know, whatever, someone being ill and we’re not going to live with that,” says Harrison.
Harrison says the festival and parade usually help bring in about $12 million to Nassau County.
The festival committee says it’s hoping to host a ‘Falling for Shrimp’ weekend in October.
