The novel coronavirus COVID-19 continues to upend the global seafood trade, reducing foodservice demand and complicating supply chains. If you have any stories on how your company is dealing with the crisis, please email us, [email protected] Here's a recap of pandemic-related seafood news from Wednesday, Dec. 9:
The US state of Maine is using $1 million of the $20.3m it has been allocated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for dealing with the coronavirus to launch a marketing campaign that will promote the quality of seafood produced there. It's the kind of promotion that many feel is needed for the entire US seafood industry.
In Ecuador, new data just added to Undercurrent News' prices portal shows that the country's vannamei shrimp continues to be the world's cheapest, dropping as prices from other major suppliers remain steady. When converted to dollars, shrimp from India, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam remains more expensive than Ecuador's.
Meanwhile, statistics show that the country's farmed shrimp production has grown just over 7% year-on-year to 1.24 billion pounds (563,051 metric tons) between January and October of 2020 despite the challenges posed by the pandemic.
Indonesian farm-gate shrimp prices dropped across the board in week 49 (Nov. 30-Dec. 6), according to the latest information on Undercurrent's data portal.
Thailand expects its shrimp production to rebound by at least 17% in 2021 after a significant drop of around 25% y-o-y in 2020, said Sorophat Panakorn, a shrimp culture specialist with the Thai branch of biotech firm Novozymes, speaking at Aqua Expo Guayaquil on Nov. 26.
And Vietnam's shrimp exports to the EU surged in October thanks to the positive impact of the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement.
Lastly, Filipino tuna canner Century Pacific is set to end 2020 with at least 20% growth in top and bottom-line figures, after its net income rose in the third quarter of the year due to an increase in demand for its products during the lockdown.
