Alas, the Crisfield Chamber of Commerce's experiment with an autumnal clam bake was not to be.
On Friday the organization announced that its annual gathering — officially the J. Millard Tawes Crab & Clam Bake — has been canceled.
A staple on the summer political calendar, the event, held each summer in Somerset County, was moved from July 15 to Oct. 14 due to COVID-19.
But after concluding that there was no way to socially distance a day of food, political gossip and backslapping, the chamber decided to cancel altogether.
"The Board of Directors for Crisfield Chamber of Commerce and the Clam Bake Chairmen have put the safety of event volunteers and many loyal patrons as well as the safety of the community first," office manager Carrie Heffington said in an email.
"This was NOT an easy decision to make."
The date for next year's event has already been chosen. It's Wednesday, July 21st 2021.
