China has lifted the sanctions on a third Ecuadorian shrimp exporter, Empacadora Del Pacifico Sociedad Anonima Edpacif, after sanctions on Industrial Pesquera Santa Priscila and Empacreci were lifted on Aug. 10 and 12 respectively.
Jose Antonio Camposano, executive vice president of the country's Camara Nacional de Acuacultura (CNA), announced the news Twitter on Aug. 15.
"The General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) representatives virtually inspected [Edpacific's] processing plant and verified the biosafety protocols applied by the company to ensure the quality and safety of the Ecuadorian product," CNA said in a statement, adding that the GACC had notified the Embassy of Ecuador in Beijing of the ban reversal.
This result was possible thanks to the timely deployment of the Ecuadorian delegation, led by the ministry of fisheries and accompanied by the foreign ministry and the CNA, CNA also said.
Ecuador's minister of production, foreign trade, investment and fisheries, Ivan
Ontaneda, added the process, allowed China to validate the "rigorous compliance with biosafety protocols".
Camposano stated it was "good news for the sector since China is the main destination for shrimp exports" and noted the World Health Organization has insisted that food is not a way of transmitting the coronavirus.
Last month, Santa Priscila, Edpacif, and Empacreci had their export licenses for China suspended after the country's authorities said coronavirus was detected in five samples taken from the outer packaging of shrimp from the latter two companies.
In Santa Priscila's case, a positive sample was taken from the inside of the shipping container transporting the company's shrimp.
As a result of that, Chinese retailers moved swiftly to remove products by Santa Priscila.
Camposano told Undercurrent News traces of COVID-19 on outer packaging are likely to have come from the long chain of custody and that there was no way to track them back to Ecuador.
