A not-for-profit Australian tuna industry group has received a grant of AUD 50,000 ($35,000) from the state government of Queensland to help with its endeavors at bolstering the sector's response to the coronavirus pandemic, reports Mirage News.

The grant will be used by Tuna Australia to develop a 'roadmap' for developing new domestic and export markets for the industry via the use of modified atmospheric packaging.

“The project will investigate the processes, infrastructure requirements, distribution models and available domestic and export markets for extended shelf life tuna loins," Mark Furner, Australian minister for agricultural industry development and fisheries, reportedly said.

According to Tuna Australia, the value-added loins and portions segment of Queensland's tuna sector is usually handled by a third party -- by bringing these operations into the industry, the group hopes it can build greater market access and improve the profitability of the struggling sector.

The grant formed part of the Queensland government's AUD 27.25 million coronavirus recovery package, according to Mirage News.
