The Argentine fishing vessel body Capece, together with the Argentine-Patagonian fishing industry representative body (Capip), and the United Maritime Workers Syndicate concluded a 10-hour meeting on July 17 by signing a document defining the minimum wage for the 12-month period ending on March 31, 2021.

Thus, the basic salary of shrimp, hake and crab fishers working onboard freezer fishing vessels is established now at ARS 18,000 ($256.06) from Aug. 1, 2020, and at ARS 24,000 from Dec. 1.

The Argentine red shrimp industry has been beset for weeks by a long-running worker's strike, after companies responded to the price slump by ordering their workers to take a lower wage in order to make this year's fishing season financially viable.

Unlike European countries, Argentina’s debt-stricken government has few tools at its disposal to bail out industries that have been hurt by the pandemic.

"Finally, the strike is over," one industry source told Undercurrent News. "The parties involved reached an agreement so now the fleets are taking all the necessary steps and following all COVID-19 protocols to go fishing again."

“Shipowners are willing to lose the season instead of losing money catching product and selling at cost while paying little fortunes to their crews,” the source had previously told Undercurrent

The strike for the frozen on-board trade has resulted in estimated losses of 30,000 metric tons of shrimp to the market, resulting in a growing shortage of the crustacean in Japan and Europe, where the holidaymaking season is beginning to recover from pandemic lows, a second industry source told Undercurrent.

Workers had been waiting on standby on the freezer trawlers docked at the southern port in Puerto Madryn, having observed a lengthy quarantine period. Although Argentina is among the top 20 nations globally in terms of infection numbers -- at 114,783 as of July 17 -- most of these stem from the capital Buenos Aires, and other bigger cities.
