The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) is worried that the rapid development of COVID-19 vaccines could be using more horseshoe crab blood than usual and threaten the population. PCRM says the synthetic option, called recombinant Factor C is shown to be scientifically superior. Allen Burgenson, who serves as the Global Matters Subjects Expert for Testing Solutions at Lonza Walkersville in Frederick County, Maryland, says horseshoe crabs are healthy when they are collected and healthy when they are returned to the water less than 24 hours later.
