Shrimp season is finally here. After a couple weeks of delay, the DMR announced last week that shrimp season would open today.
Last year, shrimp processors were shut down due to COVID-19. This year, the delay was caused by the increased amount of fresh water due to all of the rain.
Now salinity and temperature of the water have both increased which are two key factors for shrimp growth and productivity.
Mississippi Commercial Fisheries United Executive Director Ryan Bradley tells News 25 how special it is to have the best shrimp here on the Coast. “Well, you know, we really take it for granted here on the Coast because we are so used to having the best available. You know, we really are spoiled because we really have some of the best seafood in the entire world right here in Mississippi.”
Bradley says those looking to buy fresh shrimp can head down to the nearest harbor and buy them right off the boat and you may expect to pay a little more for shrimp this year.
