Starting in two weeks, more Jacksonville baseball fans will be able to go out to the ballgame.

The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp announced Monday that 121 Financial Ballpark will open to full capacity beginning on June 8.

The club also announced that it is ending its mask requirements, effective immediately, starting with Tuesday night's home game against the Durham Bulls. The Jumbo Shrimp said, however, that face coverings are still recommended for fans who have not yet received a vaccination against COVID-19.

Up until this point, the Triple-A baseball club has only permitted a capacity of about 45 percent because of precautions against the coronavirus pandemic. The ballpark holds a capacity of 11,000, so the 45 percent cap limited the team to roughly 5,000 spectators.

The new procedure goes into effect beginning with the series against the Norfolk Tides and accompanies a Two for Tuesday promotion. Single-game tickets for the June 8 series and all remaining games in the 2021 Triple-A season go on sale beginning at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

"This news has been a long time in the making, from our safe reopening for special events throughout the last calendar year to beginning the 2021 Jumbo Shrimp season last month with our safe reopening plan. We could not be more thrilled to have all of our Jumbo Shrimp fans back here at 121 Financial Ballpark," Jumbo Shrimp owner Ken Babby said in a statement. "We express tremendous gratitude to all of the city and state officials, gameday staff and front office staff who worked tirelessly with us to keep our community safe. The atmosphere in Jacksonville has always made our games special for fans and players alike, and we are ecstatic for that to return."

The end of the capacity limit is among several steps toward reopening in the sports world both inside and outside Jacksonville during recent weeks.

On April 24, VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena became the first major American sporting event to permit full capacity indoors for the UFC 261 mixed martial arts competition, which drew an attendance of 15,269. UFC president Dana White said the event attracted an arena-record gate of $3.3 million.

Other sports events to announce planned returns to full capacity Monday included the University of Maryland, the NFL's Carolina Panthers and the ATP Tour's Winston-Salem Open, the Associated Press reported.

The return to full attendance also represents a financial boost for the Jumbo Shrimp, which had its entire 2020 season wiped out by the pandemic.

Florida continues to show progress against the spread of COVID-19. The state's vaccination total surpassed 10 million on Sunday, while Duval County has recorded a new-case positivity rate below 5 percent every day for the past two weeks.
