A Morro Bay restaurant owner is asking the public to help identify a man caught on video stealing hundreds of dollars worth of live crabs.

Giovanni DeGarimore posted security video on the restaurant’s Facebook page showing the crustacean heist around 3:30 a.m. Saturday at Giovanni’s Fish Market.

A man in a hooded jacket drives a Toyota sedan to the restaurant’s outdoor tanks, uses a bolt cutter to break the lock and tosses crabs into a big plastic tub.

DeGarimore’s Facebook post says he was alerted by the restaurant’s security system and that the Morro Bay police arrived within nine minutes, but the thief was gone. The post included video of the crime and the plea: “Please share, let’s make this guy famous.”

He estimates the value of the stolen crabs at $200 to $300.

As of Monday morning, no arrest had been reported. DeGarimore asked that any tips be given to the police, at (805) 772-6225.
