HEMPSTEAD SAYS PEACE IS NOWHERE , IN SIGHT. TED: I YEAR AGO ON NEW HAMPSHIRE’S SEACOAST,;. ? L WE GOT BORED OF THE VERY REAL ASIAN -- REAL INVASION. THIS SPRING WE CHECKED IN AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND’S MARINE LAB FOR AN UPDATE. ARE YOU SITTING DOWN? >> YOU SEE THE PROBLEM GETTING WORSE. TED: NOT THAT MARINE SCIENCE PROFESSOR IS IN TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHY. GREEN CRABS FIRST REACH THE EAST COAST ABOUT 200 YEARS AGO. TODAY, WITH RISING SEA TEMPERATURES. >> THEY MULTIPLIED IN NUMBERS THAT ARE UNPRECEDENTED. THEN THEY MOVE INTO COMPETITION WITH NATIVE SPECIES, ATE ALL OF THE AVAILABLE FOOD, THEREFORE LEADS TO MILLIONS OF DOLLARS OF DAMAGE. TED: SIMPLY PUT, GREEN CRABS DO NOT PLAY WELL WITH OUR REGIONS NATIVE SPECIES ROCK CRABS. YOU MIGHT WONDER, WHY CAN’T THE HOMETOWN BOYS AND GIRLS THEN FOR THEMSELVES AGAINST THE METER BUT SMALLER GREEN BULLIES? >> THE GREEN CRABS DO NOT NEED THE ADULTS, THEY GO FOR THE JUVENILE ONES. TED: FOR STARTERS, THE TEAM IS TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHY GREEN CRABS ARE SO MUCH HARDIER AND HARDER TO KILL THAN OUR NATIVE SPECIES. I TAKE IT THAT THIS IS NOT ACTUALLY A MINI MARINE PLANET IS FOR CRABS? >> IT IS A TREADMILL THAT ALLOWS US TO MEASURE HOW WELL THOSE CRABS CAN PERFORM IN A SEMI-CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT. TED: AS IF ALL THAT WAS NOT BAD ENOUGH, IN RECENT YEARS, THE GREEN CRABS HAVE OPENED UP A SECOND FRONT FROM THE NORTH, INVADING THE GULF OF MAINE FROM THE CANADIAN MARITIMES, AND THESE GUYS ARE WAY CRABBY OR THAN ANY CRABS THEY HAVE SEEN. >> IT’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’S THE BEAUTIFUL, RUGGED COAST OF MAINE. IT DOES A GREAT JOB CATCHING BIRDS. TED: THE BIRDLIKE IS EXTENSIVE, SOMETIMES ATTRACTING SNOWY OWLS INTO MAY. HE KNOWS NOT EVERYONE IS LOOKING FOR A FLYCATCHER. >> THERE IS A GREAT TRAIL SYSTEM HERE, TRAILS THE GO AROUND THE POST, UP TO THE WATER, UP TO WOOD ISLAND. A BEAUTIFUL LIGHTHOUSE. TED: SINCE THE AUDUBON SOCIETY OWNS MOST OF THE 35 ACRES OF WOOD ISLAND, MY CURIOSITY WAS PETE. MY FRIENDS OFFERED TO TAKE US OUT FOR A CLOSER LOOK, AND WITH GEORGE, WE MADE OUR WAY DOWN THE MOUTH OF THE RIVER INTO SACO BAY AND THE ATLANTIC. >> IS ONE OF THE OLDEST LIGHTS IN MAINE. TED: ONE OF ONLY TWO ISLAND LIGHTHOUSES IN MAINE WITH REGULAR SUMMER TOURS. BUT THIS ONE MIGHT WELL HAVE BEEN LOST. >> IN 2003 IT WAS ON THE LIST OF MOST ENDANGERED LIGHTHOUSES. TED: THE FRIENDS OF THE LIGHT STEPPED IN, FUNDRAISING AND COMPLETELY RESTORED THE HISTORIC PROPERTY TO ITS LOOK IN 1906. TODAY, FROM JULY THROUGH AUGUST, THE FRIENDS FERRY VISITORS THREE MILE OUT TO THE LIGHT GRAY BOARDWALK LEADS VISITORS TO A TRULY UNIQUE DESTINATION. >> THERE ARE NOT TOO MANY OPPORTUNITIES TO BE ON AN ISLAND AND GET THE VIEW FROM THE TOWERS. TED: AND, A SPECTACULAR PRESERVATION EFFORT FOR A SPECIAL LITTLE ISLAND CURIOUSLY CLOSE TO THE MAINLAND. >> IT’S KIND OF AMAZING TO THINK WHEN YOU’RE OFTEN THE LIGHTHOUSE YOU’RE ONLY MINUTES FROM DOWNTOWN BIDDEFORD. >> YOU CAN HEAR THE ICE CREAM MAN. IT’S A GREAT WAY TO SPEND AN AFTERNOON. SHAYNA: YOU JUST WANT TO TAKE IT ALL IN. WOOD ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE IS NOT SCHEDULING TOURS AT THIS TIME, THEY PLAN TO RESUME WHEN IT IS ONCE AGAIN SAFE TO DO SO. COMING UP, IT’S A CLASSIC CANDY BUT WHAT’S IN A NEE
