Saucy Crab, a family-owned chain restaurant with a seafood menu, officially opened Feb. 12 in Homewood.
The restaurant, at 17628 Halsted St., became the fifth restaurant in the chain, following openings in Tinley Park in 2018, then Evergreen Park, Bourbonnais and Grand Rapids, Michigan.
The decor is meant to remind guests of the ocean, said Michael J. Qiu, the manager of the Homewood location. There’s a boat steering wheel above the front door. The hanging, overhead lights are surrounded by rope meant to resemble the rope used by a fishing boat. Genuine fishing netting also hangs overhead along with buoys, life rings and boat paddles.
When dining at Saucy Crab, you are seated next to a wooden fixture with names and statements written in black marker by previous customers at the restaurant. “You can sign your name when you visit,” said Qui.
Qiu wasn’t concerned about opening a new restaurant during the pandemic because he has the future in mind.
“Life will go back to normal. As long as you have good food, people will come,” he said.
Qiu said the business expanded to Homewood at the suggestion of its customers.
“When managing the Tinley Park location, we had a customer from Homewood always telling us, ‘You need to open up in Homewood,'” he said.
Because of the pandemic, Qiu said there is no date scheduled for the Saucy Crab's official ribbon-cutting formal grand opening.
“We don’t really want to do the grand opening at this time, because we’re still at 50% capacity,” he said.
Qiu said that Saucy Crab is “family friendly” and serves seafood baskets that can feed a family. The menu also includes a variety of smaller seafood platters, including gator meat, catfish, snow crab and shrimp.
In addition to a dining area, Saucy Crab has a full bar with margaritas, cocktails, house wines and premium beer.
The restaurant, next to Kohl's, also has carry-out services.
