Following COVID-19 protocols, volunteers including 'Crabby' Calistoga Soroptimists Gina Penna, left, and Monica Garibay welcomed crab feed diners to the organization's drive-thru fundraiser on Saturday.
About 200 diners, half of the usual crowd, supported the Calistoga Soroptimist's Crab Feed Drive-Thru fundraiser on Saturday.
It wasn’t the party it usually is, but the Calistoga Soroptimist Crab Feed annual fundraiser was a success all the same.
On Saturday, about 200 crab lovers picked up a delicious crab dinner and supported the organization’s 20th annual fund drive.
Calistoga Soroptimists support educational programs for women and children, including scholarships for college, scholarships for Hearts and Hands Preschool, and programs like the recent Read Aloud event at the elementary school.

For the past 19 years, the group has held the huge and popular events at the Napa County Fairgrounds, hosting about 400 diners, with wine and other donated items up for a live auction, typically raising about $100,000.
The event was challenged this year on several fronts. Most of the donations come from local businesses, wineries and lodging properties. But due to the pandemic, “Honestly, we did not feel comfortable asking them to donate this year. They are always so generous, and they all have so much on their plate and they’re all hurting. It was a delicate balance, asking businesses to contribute,” said Soroptimist MaryAnne Dimitry.
Individually, the Soroptimists each donated a couple of bottles of wine and held a wine raffle. Between the raffle and other donations, the organization raised about $20,000 this year.
“People really stepped up,” Dimitry said.
The Calistoga Soroptimists will still be able to support its many programs with funds it has in reserve, Dimitry said.
On Saturday, following COVID-19 protocols, volunteers assisted diners as they drove through and picked up dinners of 1-1/2 pounds of crab, Caesar salad, manicotti and strawberry cake for dessert, prepared by the staff at Cal Mart.
The organization is looking forward to next year, but depending on the outcome of the sale of the fairgrounds, the Soroptimists and other charitable organizations could be struggling to find another large enough venue in town, Dimitry said.
