CANTON A restaurant specializing in boil cajun seafood plans to open in a shopping plaza on the city's west side.
A+ Crab is opening in April or May at the former site of Top China Buffet in the Country Fair Shopping Center at 4309 Tuscarawas Street W, restaurant owner Nelson Dong said.
The restaurant has applied for a liquor permit and also plans to serve alcohol and operate a bar, he said.
Dong is affiliated with Wild Crab, a sister restaurant in Columbia, South Carolina, according to that eatery's website. Menus are similar between Wild Crab and A+ Crab.
A+ Crab has a restaurant near Chapel Hill Mall in a plaza at Howe Avenue and Buchholzer Boulevard in Summit County.
The restaurant's website says other locations are planned in Spartanburg, North Charleston and Sumter, South Carolina; as well as in Wilson, Raleigh and Goldsboro, North Carolina, and Birmingham, Alabama.
A+ Crab describes its seafood boil specialty as being similar to "Frogmore stew," which is considered a classic low-country South Carolina dish. The A+ Crab version features potatoes, corn, a variety of seafood, and seasoning and spice level options.
A "secret cajun recipe" is cited for the seafood boil.
Fried food is also on the menu at the Summit County restaurant, including okra, shrimp, oysters, soft shell crab and crab cakes.
The restaurant website says the "A Plus Crab team (was) created by a group of friends who (were) born and raised together. ... They all have more than 10 years of restaurant experience, and they have their own seafood restaurants."
For the upcoming Canton site, a building permit has been approved and architectural plans have been submitted to the city Building Department. Plans also were submitted in February for signage and interior remodeling work.
Based on the plans, occupancy will be 206 people, including 10 employees. The plaza space is 6,530 square feet, with 4,100 square feet of that being remodeled.
