Ange Dido suggests local diners who want their claws on a different flavor around Gastonia should feast their eyes, and stomachs, on The Juicy Crab.
The Juicy Crab – a new spot that celebrates New Orleans-style Cajun seafood – joined the band of Franklin Square restaurants on Jan. 21.
Located at the former Applebee’s, at 3628 E. Franklin Blvd., the 4,750 square-feet building also had a brief stint as a Denny’s.
Customers approaching the restaurant from the adjacent parking lot are immediately met with The Juicy Crab’s nautical theme, which includes a fake shark and several crabs caught in a net by the front door.
Themes of fresh catches and industrial charm appear throughout the restaurant’s décor, fixtures and furniture, which, matched with the aroma and taste emitting from each plate or bag of seafood boil, could remind some customers of a time they were dining in the Big Easy, or somewhere along the Gulf Coast.
The Juicy Crab opened its first location in Duluth, Georgia, in 2015, and since then, has opened more than 30 locations from Ohio, down to Florida and over to Texas. Dido believes The Juicy Crab has perfected Cajun seafood boil, which keeps customers coming back.
“One thing that makes us unique is our seasoning,” said Dido, a Navy veteran who recently moved to Gaston County from Atlanta in January. He worked at several locations of The Juicy Crab around Atlanta over the last two years before managing the Gastonia location.
“Anybody can get just seafood. But making our seasoning is what makes The Juicy Crab.”
Customers will find a number of boiled seafood items – lobster tail, several types of crab, shrimp (with or without the head), crawfish, clams, mussels and more – which are available individually or as medley. For example, the Hungry Feast juicy combo includes a cluster of snow crab legs, shrimp, sausage, three eggs, corn and a potato, all of which are tossed in a bag of buttery sauce and served on a tin plate.
Fried fish lovers will find catfish, tilapia, oysters and shrimp. The restaurant also features fried calamari, raw or steamed oysters and hush puppies on the menu.
Dido trained the kitchen staff to not only serve delicious food, but also deliver a consistent taste. Familiar faces have returned to the restaurant up to four times in recent weeks and complimented the consistency, Dido said.
“That’s one thing I take pride in,” Dido said. “I want to make sure we provide the same quality and experience every time you come in here.”
Aside from the savory seafood, Dido and his staff work hard to offer customers first-class service and a welcoming atmosphere.
“You come in here and you feel like part of a family,” he said. “And when you leave, we want you to rave about the service.”
There are several open positions at The Juicy Crab. Interested job candidates should head to The Juicy Crab website and click “Careers.”
