After a long, long wait, the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp are planning to splash back into action.
The newly promoted Triple-A club announced April 6 as its opening day for a 142-game 2021 season, returning minor league baseball to Northeast Florida for the first time in more than a year and a half.
The Jumbo Shrimp open against the Charlotte Knights at 121 Financial Ballpark, the first minor league game in town since the 2020 season was wiped out by the coronavirus pandemic. In all, the club is scheduled to play 72 games at home.
Under the modified schedule, the Jumbo Shrimp will only face divisional opponents this season: Charlotte, the Durham Bulls, the Gwinnett Stripers, the Memphis Redbirds, the Nashville Sounds and the Norfolk Tides. Charlotte and Norfolk are on the schedule for 42 games apiece.
The move to Triple-A links Jacksonville with some former Southern League rival cities. Charlotte lined up against Jacksonville in the Double-A Southern League from 1976 to 1992; Memphis, then known as the Chicks, from 1978 to 1997; and Nashville from 1978 to 1984;
With the exception of the All-Star break, the season will be split into six-game series running from Tuesdays through Sundays, with Mondays off. Game times are not yet set.
Opening Day will be Jacksonville's first at the Triple-A level since 1968.
The Jumbo Shrimp have not played a game since Aug. 31, 2019, a 2-1 loss to the Jackson Generals.
