Ecuadorian farm-gate shrimp prices almost all sizes started the new year with a rise after a slight decrease during the last week of 2020, data tracked by Undercurrent News' prices portal shows.

As of the first week of 2021 (Jan. 4-10), head-on, shell-on (HOSO) shrimp prices were $4.90 per kilogram for 20/30 count shrimp; $3.90/kg for 30/40 count; $3.45/kg for 40/50; and $3.15/kg for 50/60 counts.

This means an increase of between $0.10/kg and $0.20/kg compared to the levels seen a week before. Prices for smaller, 60/70, 70/80, 80/100 and 100/120-count shrimp remained flat during the same period.

"Let us not be over-confident, however," a small Ecuadorian shrimp producer, who spoke in condition of anonymity, told Undercurrent. "Certainly, it is good that prices are rising, but we have to be thorough. I can assure you we will have to overcome many great obstacles this year."

Year-on-year, prices are down by between 15% and 25%, depending on sizes, compared to the first week of 2021. The biggest difference is in prices for larger sizes, as the chart below shows.

According to the chart presented below, Ecuadorian shrimp prices began the new year as the lowest in the world still.

When converted to dollars, shrimp from India, Indonesia, and Thailand remain more expensive than Ecuador's. China's is by far the most expensive shrimp globally, even though prices seemed to be falling a few weeks ago, the latest data available shows.

Besides, as the second chart below shows, shrimp prices in Vietnam started the year with a decrease and currently are at VND 135,000/kg ($5.84/kg).

"Prices in Ecuador are still the lowest in the world, which shows what is going to be one of our biggest challenges," the Ecuadorian shrimp producer also said. "We [producers] have to defend what we really have, and Ecuador must demonstrate to remain a global leader within this industry."

Ecuador's shrimp sector will have to change to meet the demands of the global market impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, Jose Camposano, president of the country's aquaculture chamber, known by its Spanish abbreviation, CNA, also previously said.

"The crisis generated by the [coronavirus] pandemic isn't over and, although the calendar shows the beginning of a new decade, many of the effects of the lockdown and the economic depression will be palpable in the following years," he said.

"We have to be vigilant and make an effort every day to get the business forward. We have learned many lessons during the pandemic. Therefore, we now have to change what isn't working anymore to adapt to the new world that will emerge when all this is over."

November boost

Ecuador’s shrimp exports to China jumped to 43,000 metric tons in November, up 27% compared to the previous year's figures, and providing some Christmas cheer for the country’s shrimp producers, as Undercurrent previously reported.

The hike lifted total exports for the month to 70,000t, according to data from Ecuador’s Camara Nacional de Acuacultura, or national chamber of aquaculture; the second-highest on record, and up 14% compared with November of 2019.

Also, the EU imported some 13,884t of Ecuadorian shrimp for an average price of €5.01/kg ($6.12), up 11% in volume and 5% in value month-on-month, data shows. Year-on-year, the export volume increased by 47% while the average unit value dropped by 16%.

Finally, Ecuador continued to smash its previous pace of delivering shrimp to the US, as Undercurrent also reported. The US imported 8,884t worth $59.7m in November, 47% more in volume and 49% more in value from there than in Nov. 2019.

The South American country continues to deliver one of the best bargains, too. The average price paid for Ecuadorian shrimp in November was $6.72/kg, 1% more than in November 2019.
