The Thai Shrimp Association has projected total export volumes of vannamei shrimp from the country this year to come to roughly 150,000 metric tons, marking a drop of some 14%, reports Bangkok Post.
Export values are also expected to drop, down by 21% to roughly THB 44 billion ($1.4bn), attributed to a strong baht and weaker overseas sales as a result of the pandemic.
Last December, the association forecast an increase in shrimp exports by 20%, with increased production anticipated across Thailand.
In reality, Thai shrimp production has dropped by a further 20,000t this year, down to 270,000t, attributed to shrimp diseases -- such as white feces disease, white spot syndrome and early mortality syndrome -- and weak global demand.
However, the association has projected a recovery in production volumes next year, forecasting a growth of 15% up to 310,000t. Domestic demand is also expected to surge, driven by government stimulus measures, to consume 25% of all Thai shrimp in 2021.
