Inshore white shrimp season will close at sunset Wednesday in Terrebonne and Lafourche and across most of the Louisiana coast.
The only exception is east of Plaquemines Parish, including Lake Pontchartrain, where waters will remain open until further notice, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries said today.
"Recent biological sampling conducted by the department indicates that the average white shrimp size within large portions of state inside waters is smaller than the minimum possession count allowed by law," the agency said. "A closure is needed to protect the small white shrimp in these waters and provide an opportunity for growth to larger and more valuable sizes."
State law says each cargo can average no more than 100 white shrimp per pound except during the period from Oct. 15 through the third Monday in December.
