Crab/rockfish combos offer banner fishing outside Golden Gate - Stockton Record

jumi.indah.link

If you want to catch a limit of 10 tasty Dungeness crabs and a limit of 10 colorful rockfish, going on a crab/rockfish combo outside of the Golden Gate this time of year is hard to beat.

In fact, fishing on a charter boat or private boat or from shore or a pier is about the only way to get fresh crab to eat at this time, since the commercial crab season is still closed due to issues with potential whale entanglements.

The recreational Dungeness crab season opened statewide on Nov. 7 and crab/rockfish combos have been departing harbors from Monterey to Bodega Bay most days since then. San Francisco Bay Area party boats reported top-notch fishing for crabs, rockfish and some lingcod over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

On Nov. 28, the Bass Tub out of Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco returned with limits of crab and rockfish after venturing outside of the Golden Gate, reported Aaron Anfinson, captain of Bass Tub.

“Dec. 6 will be our final trip of the season, a crab-only trip, and then we will be putting away the crab gear until next year,” said Anfinson. “There are a few days left to get out on some combo trips. We will be running sturgeon and bass trips after that.” Information: (415) 456-9055.

James Smith, captain of the California Dawn at the Berkeley Marina, reported full pots of crab and full limits of rockfish on Sunday.

“We experienced beautiful flat calm weather and a wide-open rockfish bite while fishing at the Farallon Islands,” Smith said. “We ended up with full limits of jumbo crabs and a handful of lings. We also saw lots of whales and a 16 foot great white shark stopped by the boat for a visit.”

The California Dawn and New El Dorado II came back with combined scores of 510 rockfish (51 limits), 510 Dungeness crab (51 limits) and 14 lingcod that day.

On Monday, the California Dawn checked in with 210 rockfish (21 limits) and 210 Dungeness crab (21 limits), while the New Eldorado came back with 190 rockfish (19 limits) and 190 Dungeness crab (19 limits) and one lingcod.

The Happy Hooker and the Pacific Dream, also berthed at Berkeley Marina, reported top-notch fishing Sunday also.

“We had a great day on the ocean,” said Capt. Chris Smith of the Happy Hooker. “The 18 anglers caught 180 rockfish, 5 lingcod and 180 Dungeness crab.” Information: (510) 223-5388

The Pacific Dream wrapped up its weekend with beautiful weather and fat sacks of rockfish and crab on Sunday. The 22 anglers bagged 220 rockfish 220 Dungeness crab, and 2 lingcod.

Before heading out for crabs and rockfish, anglers should always check the regulations and domoic acid closures.

Recreational fishermen fishing from pier, shore and boats are required to have a measuring device to ensure all Dungeness crab meet the minimum size limit of 53⁄4 inches, measured as the shortest distance through the body from edges of shell directly in front and excluding lateral spines.

West Delta sturgeon: Zack Medinas of Gatecrashers Fishing Adventures reported an average of 3 to 5 sturgeon, most legal-sized “slot” fish, caught and released on his boat most days over the past week.

His latest trip on Sunday produced two sturgeon measuring 55 and 44 inches and one undersized fish for 4 people. The anglers used salmon roe in Suisun Cut and off Chain Island in 32 to 60 feet of water. Information: (925) 497-7171.

Lake Camanche rainbows: Trout fishing at Lake Camanche has shifted into high gear with weekly fish plants and cold water temperatures. Robbie Dunham of Machine Guide Service and Bryant landed limits of rainbows up to 6.3 pounds while trolling with plastic grubs on Saturday. Information: (209) 712-6611.
