Monthly Chinese trade data shows COVID-19 contamination fears continued to depress Chinese shrimp imports in October.

Last month, China imported 24,100 metric tons of frozen warmwater shrimp, down 61% compared with the same month last year, according to latest Chinese customs data compiled by Undercurrent News.

The total cost of imports was $128 million, down 67% year-on-year, according to the figures released this week.

Traces of the coronavirus were detected on packages of imported Ecuadorian shrimp in July, with additional findings on imported packages from other origins and species since then.

From Ecuador, last month China imported just 11,000t, down 66% y-o-y.

Meanwhile, imports from India came to 6,700t, down 45% y-o-y. From Vietnam, China's third-largest supplier for the month, China imported 2,559t, down 38% y-o-y.

It means in the three months of August to October, China imported 73,000t of frozen warmwater shrimp. That is 105,000t less than the 178,000t imported over the same period last year.

Meanwhile, the average cost of shrimp (or average unit value) imported from Ecuador, China's largest supplier, was just $4.57 per kilogram in October, down 25% year-on-year.

The average unit value of imports in the month overall was $5.30/kg, down 17% y-o-y.
