Indonesia's government wants to hike its farmed shrimp production and export value by the year 2024, according to a press release from the ministry of marine affairs and fisheries (known as KKP in Indonesian).

It has launched a public consultation to get all stakeholders on board with a plan to lift shrimp export value by 250% by the year 2024.

"We at the KKP, especially at the directorate general of aquaculture, ask for input and suggestions from all parties to jointly develop this sector," said Slamet Soebjakto, the head of said aquaculture division.

Over the next five years, the government wants to develop new shrimp pond areas, based on cluster models which should see increased productivity.

It also plans to develop these areas with a polyculture model adding tilapia, seaweed, snapper and other products.

Indonesia's "commission for stakeholders and public consultation on marine and fisheries" has included shrimp farming in its "medium-term development plan". It believes shrimp pond growth can increase 2.5 times per year through to 2024, by which time production can reach 1.2 million metric tons, it suggested. This should have a value of around INR 30 trillion- INR 90tn ($2.1 billion-$6.4bn), it said.

Currently, Indonesia's shrimp export value sits behind India, Ecuador, and Vietnam, globally, it added.

The country will have to think about providing shrimp seed and feed, too. At present these industries are concentrated on Java Island, but will be needed further east if this plan is to take off.

As a first step, the government aims to "revitalize intensive and semi-intensive ponds by facilitating access to quality fry, access to infrastructure, access to financing agents, access to increased human resources, establishment of upstream-downstream institutions, and facilitating licensing and regulations".
