The Sustainable Shrimp Partnership (SSP), a collective of major Ecuadorian shrimp producers and distributors, has launched a traceability app designed to enable consumers to access key information on the journey any purchased shrimp has made to their plates.

The SSP's web application is connected to the IBM Food Trust platform, which uses blockchain technology to provide reliable data on the provenance and quality of any SSP 'blue box' shrimp via QR codes on the packaging.

"The shrimp industry worldwide produces over 5 million [metric] tons of shrimp each year, and we continue to see many examples of food fraud, especially in the seafood industry. So how can consumers trust that the products they are buying are safe for them and their families?" said Jose Antonio Camposano, executive president of Ecuador's Camara Nacional de Acuacultura.

"This is how, using the most secure and latest technology available for food traceability and committing producers to the highest levels of transparency. This way the consumers acquire the power to make an informed choice and increase their capacity to buy healthy and responsibly farmed shrimp."

SSP's members, including Omarsa, Songa and Promarisco-Grupo Nueva Pescanova, will each enter data into the IBM Food Trust's platform, covering everything from the shrimp's birth at the hatchery, how it is raised on the farm, and how it was processed and packed in the processing plant.

Blake Harris, aquaculture traceability manager for the environmental NGO and SSP board member WWF, noted that he hopes SSP's new tool will encourage other producers to follow suit.

"WWF is encouraged to see the SSP taking steps to utilize new technologies, like blockchain, to track this information electronically and share it directly with consumers," Harris said. "We hope the SSP’s leadership has a knock-on effect to drive industry-wide traceability and transparency efforts that are necessary for a more sustainable food system."
