Springfield is among more than a dozen communities about to become home to a seafood chain that just opened its first location in July.
A "Coming Soon" sign for MILLION’S CRAB now hangs at the entrance to the former TGI FRIDAY’S address at 2100 West White Oaks Drive.
The website for the business describes it as an authentic Cajun seafood restaurant with an American flavor. The menu focuses on seafood boils with the options of customizing the sauces and seafood used.
To date, Million’s Crab only operates a single restaurant in West Chester, Ohio. The restaurant opened in July after repurposing a shuttered O’CHARLEY’S address.
But 14 stores are planned for Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin, according to the company website. Illinois locations include two Chicago addresses in addition to the Springfield site.
Opening dates were not listed for any of these locations.
TGI Fridays opened at the west side address in the early 1990s. The Dallas-based chain — owned by the New York-based private equity firm, TRIARTISAN CAPITAL — already had begun downsizing its footprint in 2019 even before the novel coronavirus gutted dine-in offerings nationwide this spring.
TriArtisan Capital CEO Ray Blanchette said in May it was likely 386 locations would never reopen from the shutdown required in the early stages of the COVID-19 spread, citing sharp sales declines.
