Shrimp landings recorded by US fishermen in the Gulf of Mexico during September were at their lowest level for the month on record, according to the latest data from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Southeast Fisheries Science Center.

In total, 6.1 million pounds of shrimp were landed during the month, the lowest September volumes recorded in the Southern Shrimp Alliance's database -- which goes back as far as 2002 -- and 52.1% below the previous historic average of 12.7 milion pounds.

Over the first three quarters of the year, gulf landings are down by 58m lbs when compared to 2019, 50.4m lbs, and once again the lowest volume of January to September landings in 19 years of data coverage.

The situation is reaching record lows in nearly every state. In Louisiana, 14.8m lbs was harvested during the first nine months of the year, down 61.7% on the historic average; Florida's western coast is down 48%, and in Mississippi, landings are down 48.4%.

After a poor September harvest, Texas has now also fallen 17.3% below the historical average, with 23.1m pounds landed as of the end of Septmber. This is still up on the 22.8m lbs landed during the same period in 2019.

Only Alabama is reported to be in line with average landings, with 7.7m lbs recorded over the first nine months of 2020, a drop of just 1.4% on typical levels.
