The Argentinian offshore fishing season in national waters is set to close on Friday, Oct. 16, due to variable yields and recent increases in hake bycatch, Pescare reported.
Landings between January and Oct. 7 totaled 133,446 metric tons, down about 8% compared to the first nine months of last year and 16% compared to 2018, according to official figures.
The season, which got off to a rocky start, usually closes on Oct. 1 so the extra two weeks gave harvesters some time to make up for reduced landings seen earlier.
LOWER CATCHES SUPPORT PRICES, DESPITE LOW CHINESE ORDERS
A "cocktail of issues" caused shrimp landings to come in lower than in previous years, sources told Undercurrent News in September.
Multiple issues, including a delayed start, slower processing operations due to strict lockdowns imposed by local governments and reduced biomass slowed the pace of shrimp landings.
So, even though orders from China nearly disappeared this year, strong demand from Spain, Italy, and Japan caused prices to remain relatively supported compared to farmed shrimp.
Catches of frozen-at-sea shrimp were particularly lower, compared to the usual average, sources said.
