Thailand-based vannamei shrimp broodstock supplier Syaqua has terminated its business relationship with American Mariculture (AMI), the world's largest specific-pathogen free broodstock producer by volume, according to a release from the latter.
Under the partnership, Syaqua would produce broodstock from its nucleus breeding center in Thailand, which would then be exported to AMI's shrimp growout facility in Florida. Once fully grown, AMI would then package and ship these breeders to Syaqua customers globally.
However, on a Syaqua presentation dated April 15, 2020, the Thai firm also claimed to have reacquired 'Kentucky [broodstock] lines' from AMI, which the US breeder has taken issue with, claiming never to have sold any of its lines to the company.
Syaqua then terminated the agreement on July 1 this year, agreeing to leave AMI premises on or before Aug. 30. All remaining Syaqua animals remaining on AMI property were harvested on Sept. 1, the US company said, emphasizing that no broodstock produced at the Florida site has ever been sold or transported to other facilities in the US.
As of Sept. 1, Syaqua will therefore no longer be able to claim any relationship with AMI, including the use of specific approvals granted to Syaqua due to the biosecurity and disease-free status of AMI's facility.
AMI also filed suit against Syaqua on Sept. 14 regarding the presentation's claim, and intends to pursue damages from the Thai firm, it said.
