SCOTLAND NECK

The Woofs-N- Purrs Animal Rescue Inc. staff is holding their first annual shrimp sale to meet their foster animals’ needs.

The volunteer-based entity is a group of women who are helping to foster dogs and cats, WNPAR President Marion Cotten said on Wednesday.

“We are just getting it started, but having said that, I’ve been rescuing for years and always been involved,” Cotten said.

She said she was encouraged by others in the community to pursue applying for a 501©3, which is still pending.

According to the N.C. Secretary of State website, the organization formed June 13 and is listed as a nonprofit corporation.

The organization’s Treasurer Patty Langley, said she is excited about having an animal rescue in Scotland Neck.

“I lost a cat, and Marion let me adopt one of her cats, and that’s how we connected,” Langley said. “We had a lot in common, and that went from there. It’s something that people need to be aware of it. It’s something that definitely needs to be addressed. There are too many homeless animals all over. So, we need to help them find homes and control the population.”

Cotten said the town attempted to work out a way between Enfield and other towns to share an animal control officer, but there were not sufficient funds to keep one employed in the area for long.

“That fell through as well, and the money still wasn’t there,” she said. “We have a large group of cat colonies, and they just keep reproducing. We’re just really trying to do the right thing by the animals and the community. A lot of these animals are very adoptable.”

Another known animal rescue in Halifax County is Rainbow Animal Rescue, Cotten said.

“They’re wonderful,” she said. “They have taken many of my animals to transport up North.”

Cotten said her family goes to Engelhard, a fishing community on the Pamlico Sound, about this time of year to get fresh shrimp off the boats.

“But this year, my husband made the suggestion and he said, ‘Well, I think this would make a really great fundraiser,’ ” she said. “That’s when we decided to do this as our first annual fundraiser.”

Marion’s husband, Whit Cotten, said he goes down to get the shrimp off the boat when they come into the dock and are fresh.

Marion said the sale’s purpose is to bring funds into the rescue for vaccinations, adoptions, spay and neutering. The shrimp sale is preorder and prepaid by Oct. 5, she said.

“If we end up needing 300 pounds of shrimp, we can handle it,” Marion said. “But we’ve gotten orders in this morning. We just got a $100 order — 10 pounds of shrimp. This is so early in it, because we just got the flyers out in the past week. Everybody still has time. We’re excited.”

According to the flyer, N.C. Large Green Tail shrimp is $12 per pound for 1-4 pounds and $10 per pound for 5 pounds or more. The tentative pickup date is Oct. 17 at 1006 Church St. in Scotland Neck. Signs will be posted. For questions or to place orders, call Marion at 919-210-8737, Langley at 252-903-1305, Joelle Dickey at 252-883-9788 or Susan Hanff at 252-578-7058.
