US' Midland Co the latest to launch RAS farm for domestic shrimp - Undercurrent News

The US-based land-based farmer Midland Co. -- formerly known as Kimle Aquaculture -- has announced the construction of a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) in Story City, Iowa, for the production of domestic vannamei shrimp.

Construction work has begun on an initial 20,000 square foot commercial demonstration facility, Midland said, which will then serve as a model for any future facilities. Each farm unit will have the capacity to produce 80,000 pounds of shrimp annually.

The firm's contract grower model will work with other farms in the US Midwest to integrate shrimp production into their own enterprises, it added.

Midland added that it will be simplifying existing RAS technology by introducing an algae-based wastewater treatment. The algae will be used to capture nutrients from the water and carbon from the air, leaving the water both purified and oxygenated before being harvested and used as an alternative fertilizer. Pilot trials for the concept have already been trialed successfully, Midland claims.

"Midland Co. is an impressive venture that has made significant strides in a short period of time," said Jared Johnson, a member of Accurate Development, Midland's lead construction partner for both this and future facilities.

"I believe in the technology, product, and team of Midland Co. and know that this company will have a high impact for Iowa and is a huge opportunity to diversify protein production and build future regenerative agriculture opportunities."

The shrimp will be sold as fresh, never-frozen, likely as a means to set it apart from foreign imports in the eyes of domestic consumers.

Speaking on Undercurrent News' shrimp outlook webinar earlier this month, CP Foods senior vice president Robins Macintosh said that his company would also be looking to establish a premium fresh niche for its domestic US shrimp, as it continues to build a vannamei RAS farm in the state of Florida.

This will likely be the case for any farmers intending to grow shrimp in the US to sell to the domestic market, which he noted will not be able to compete on price with Asian imports for the foreseeable future.
