The new free trade agreement between Vietnam and the EU, which came into force from Aug. 1, has already left its mark on the country's tuna export statistics, reports VNExpress.
Shipments of tuna surged after the agreement took effect, with exports up 65% year-on-year during the first half of August, bringing in $6.3 million.
The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) has attributed the rise to the free trade agreement, noting that the majority of the orders were for frozen, steamed and canned products -- all of which have seen tariffs scrapped or reduced by the agreement.
There is potential for more growth still, VASEP noted, as the share of tuna in total exports to the EU had dropped from 24% to 19% between 2018 and 2019.
With some technical issues resolved, VASEP said it expects tuna export figures to rise further still in the remaining months of 2020. Last year's tuna exports brought in $719m for the country's traders.
