The COVID-19 pandemic's effects on the global shrimp trade can continue to be felt across the globe.

But while Ecuadorian exports to China from three firms were banned during the summer after concerns about traces of the virus were found on the outer packaging of some shrimp shipments, overall Ecuadorian exports to China in July 2020 remained largely unchanged at 37,000 metric tons, similar to 2019 levels.

In India, prices for smaller-sized domestic shrimp in the main farming state of Andhra Pradesh are understood to have fallen since the start of September as heavy rains and the threat of shrimp diseases led to mass harvests. 

European shrimp processors, meanwhile, have already begun their orders for the Christmas and New Year's holidays in part to get a headstart for fear that processing plants' social distancing measures could reduce capacity. 

Chilean salmon prices look set to go on benefiting from the recent (now suspended) truck strike until prices "find their new level", sources told Undercurrent News.

A major toothfish harvester in Peru told Undercurrent that his company faces the unwelcome combination of higher harvesting costs and weaker demand due to COVID-19. 

Lastly, restaurants in the US states of New Jersey and Pennsylvania are opening up for indoor dining but those in New York City remain closed.
