If not for the pandemic, I don’t think it ever would have occurred to me to order takeout from a place like The Kickin’ Crab.
Cajun-inspired crawfish restaurants like this local chain and countless others are ubiquitous in Orange County. And at least a few times a year I find myself craving a bucketload of heavily seasoned crawfish, shrimp and crab mixed with tender red potatoes, Andouille sausage and boiled corn dumped onto a table covered with butcher paper. No plates. No silverware. Just a roll of paper towels and a big, fun, spicy mess.
I don’t know why I never thought to bring something like this home before now. I guess I feared the mess. But The Kickin’ Crab supplies all the butcher paper you could possibly need to cover the table, so the clean-up is easy. Simply roll everything into a ball when you’re finished. It’s exactly what I was craving — and a great break from the usual takeout routine.
Crawfish and shrimp start around $14, while the family style combos start at $47. You’ll want to have some cold beer on hand, and maybe even a frozen mug or two.
