Nestlé announced new plant-based tuna in Switzerland ahead of a global rollout, its first move into the growing market for plant-based seafood alternatives.

The vegan tuna, made with only six ingredients including pea protein and wheat gluten, will first be sold in Switzerland, under its Garden Gourmet brand, at the end of August.

The plant-based tuna will be sold as a chilled product for salads, sandwiches, and pizzas, as well as plant-based tuna sandwiches in select stores.
Nestlé developed the plant-based tuna within 9 months, using its past experience developing its own plant-based burgers, ground meat, meatballs, sausages, cold cuts, chicken nuggets, and chicken filets. The sales of Nestlé’s plant-based meat products reached around 200 million Swiss francs ($218.7 million) last year.

Stefan Palzer, Nestlé Chief Technology Officer, said: “Sustainably produced plant-based seafood alternatives can help to reduce overfishing and to protect the biodiversity of our oceans. Our plant-based tuna alternative is delicious, nutritious and high in protein. We are excited to launch this great product, and other plant-based fish and shellfish alternatives are already under development.”
