Researchers at a major Mexican university recently published a study alleging "food fraud" in samples of domestically produced canned tuna they tested.
In addition to tuna, DNA tests found traces of dolphin meat and other fish species, the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico wrote in a press release describing a project led by academic Jose Francisco Montiel Sosa.
Montiel and his team used a technique known as polymerase chain reaction, or PCR, to analyze 15 samples of canned tuna in oil and water. The companies that produced the tuna were not disclosed.
According to the university, Montiel and his team reportedly found traces of dolphin meat in three of the 15 samples.
