Witnesses say 40-year-old Craig Hanrahan dove off a center console boat around 3:15 p.m. and was found floating face down. He had to be pulled from the water, which is typically 2 to 3 feet deep in that general area, OCSO said.
Hanrahan was loaded onto a pontoon boat and rushed to the Coast Guard Station, but was later pronounced dead at Fort Walton Beach Medical Center, the release said.
This marks the third death in the East Pass/Crab Island area this year.
The first, 29-year-old Michael Cole of Byrum, Mississippi, drowned in June while snorkeling near the west jetty. Another man died the same week after jumping in the water at Crab Island and was pulled into an outgoing current.
Also in June, 44-year-old Travis Forbes of Georgia, was critically injured in a similar accident at Crab Island.
