FAIRPLAY — More than 180 people were expected Sunday at the Fairplay fire company’s inaugural crab feed fundraiser, the event chairman said.

It was the first sit-down, in-person fundraiser the Community Volunteer Fire Company Inc. of District No. 12 has held since a bingo event in February, Crab Feed Chairman Ed Asper said.

As it has with many other organizations’ fundraisers, the COVID-19 pandemic caused the fire company to cancel or modify fundraisers to provide for social distancing and help prevent further spread of the novel coronavirus.

Asper said company officials are hoping to make the crab feed an annual event. They chose a crab feed, “trying to find something to get people excited.”

Deb Lohman of Keedysville said she and her husband, Rick, came to help the fire company and “have some good crabs.”

“I hope it’s a good one and they do it every year,” said Daryl Warrenfeltz, who was wearing a T-shirt with the image of a large blue crab on the back.

Asper said the tables set up in pavilions at the fire company’s carnival grounds along Tilghmanton Road were more than 6 feet apart to provide for social distancing.

Signs reminded people that face coverings are required. Some people removed their masks as they sat down to have a drink while waiting for food, while others wore masks at their tables.

J.R. Thomas Seafood and Catering of Kent Island on the Eastern Shore provided the steamed blue crabs for folks who chose to dine in or pick up their orders curbside.

Tickets cost $50 if for those wanting crabs or $30 for those who chose barbecue chicken for their entree, Asper said.

The fire company is doing OK, but the pandemic caused it to cancel monthly bingos, a gun bonanza, drag-queen bingo and the carnival, Asper said.

The fire company is planning a mini- kiddie-only carnival for Sept. 3 through 5 with five rides for children, Asper said.
