Chinese customs authorities will carry out virtual inspections of Ecuadorian shrimp processing plants and one of the ports through which the product is shipped, El Universo reports.
These inspections are part of the process that both the government of Ecuador and China began when the Asian country suspended imports from three Ecuadorian shrimp companies after detecting coronavirus on the outer packaging of imported shrimp.
Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said that there has been positive progress in lifting the suspension on the three blocked companies. "All measures only apply to them, while other Ecuadorian companies' exports to China are not affected in any way," he said.
Ecuadorian authorities have asked China to reconsider its position arguing that the country's food exporting companies have always been in total compliance with the biosafety standards developed by the World Health Organization and the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization.
Ecuadorian president Lenin Moreno, who visited some of the processing plants affected by the ban, made a personal appeal to Chinese premier Xi Jinping to reconsider this sudden decision.
Once the negotiation between both parties concludes, all three suspended companies could resume their shipments, according to the authorities.
