The novel tuna quality evaluation tool based on artificial intelligence (AI) known as Tuna Scope has seen a surge in interest during the coronavirus, as travel restrictions prevent buyers from checking fish quality in person, reports Reuters.

Since the pandemic began, merchants from the Maldives, Spain, the US, and Taiwan have reportedly contacted Kazuhiro Shimura, creator of the Tuna Scope tool, asking his company to validate the quality of tuna.

Tuna Scope, which can be activated on a person's smartphone, analyzes the tail segments of tuna -- much like a traditional market buyer -- and determines quality based on various physical criteria.

The Tuna Scope app can now be downloaded anywhere, creating a unified grading standard, while Shimura is also working with the Japanese trading firm Sojitz Corporation to promote the tool.

However, one buyer spoken to by Reuters admitted to having mixed feelings over the Tuna Scope AI, which he said threatened to make a skill that had previously been passed from generation to generation unnecessary.
